Komagatake Grand Hotel is located in the Lake Tazawa Plateau Hot Springs Village, which is situated at the base of Mount Akita-Komagatake. As a designated National Hot Spring Health Resort, the hotel is the perfect place for rest and recuperation; and its favorable location that looks out over Lake Tazawa has made it a sightseeing spot as well. The area surrounding the Komagatake Grand Hotel is also the starting base for climbing Mount Akita-Komagatake. So the hotel has become a hot spring resort for taking care of the many visitors to the area, and healing weary mountain climbers. Mount Akita-Komagatake is the highest mountain (1,637 m) in Akita Prefecture, and one of the 200 famous mountains in Japan that is located at the southern edge of the Towada-Hachimantai National Park. A familiar favorite among mountain climbing enthusiasts, Mount Akita-Komagatake is also known as a treasure trove of alpine flora for the hundreds of varieties of flowering plants that bloom throughout the year. With trekking courses to suit anyone’s fitness level, the mountain can be enjoyed by people of many ages, from families with small children to the elderly.
There are numerous sightseeing spots nearby for enjoying the area’s seasonal scenery, all of which can be conveniently accessed from the Komagatake Grand Hotel. The popular Lake Tazawa is only a 20-minute drive away. With a maximum depth of 423.4 m - the deepest waters in Japan - the crystal clear and bright blue waters of this mystical lake change color on any given day. Scattered along the lakeside are a number of famous and historical sites, including the bronze Statue of Tatsuko and the towering golden Great Kannon statue. There are also many lakefront activities to enjoy, such as soaking in the natural scenery at leisure while on a sightseeing boat, or having a go at paddling a canoe or kayak. And the bustling Tazawako Ski Resort is only a 10-minute drive from the hotel, so you can easily enjoy snow sports during the winter. With a total of 13 courses, there is a slope for every skier from beginners to the advanced. Skiers can enjoy gliding over soft and powdery uncompacted snow in one section of the slopes. And the spectacular view of Lake Tazawa from the slopes is truly a sight to behold.
The hotel is also perfectly situated for relieving your tiredness from daily life with trips to the nearby secluded yet renowned Nyuto and Mizusawa Hot Springs villages. For a slightly longer trip, we recommend sightseeing at the Little Kyoto of Akita in the Kakunodate area, which is about a 40-minute drive from the hotel. Here you can enjoy the streetscapes of historical old samurai residences, and in the spring, stroll under a tunnel of cherry blossom trees stretching for around 2 km. We sincerely hope that you will choose Komagatake Grand Hotel as your base for exploring Akita Prefecture.
