The Kirishima hot spring district is permeated by an atmosphere that is very appropriate for a hot spring, with pure white steam rising up all over the place. The Kirishima Kokusai Hotel is a hot spring hotel that boasts a free-flowing natural hot spring sourced to Maruo Onsen, which is located right in the center of the Kirishima hot spring district. There are more than 10 different types of baths, including rock baths, cypress baths, steam baths, and lying-down baths. In particular, the color of the water in the open-air baths changes to a beautiful milky blue on sunny days, allowing guests to enjoy a hot spring bath amidst a mystical landscape. This is a phenomenon that occurs when the hot water components react to sunlight, and is a sign of fresh hot spring water with a complex composition. The misty water, with its simple sulfuric character, is said to have a variety of positive effects, including beautifying the skin, and it allows you to enjoy a relaxing bath.
Various types of guest rooms are available, including Japanese (tatami) rooms, western rooms, mixed Japanese-western rooms, barrier-free rooms, and more. On the top floor of the hotel are the premium rooms, some of which include private open-air baths. These rooms are especially spacious and elegant, and the view from the observation terraces is something to behold. You can enjoy a unique view of a townscape pervaded by a hot spring atmosphere and the far-off majesty of Mt. Sakurajima. The hotel is roughly 30 minutes by car from Kagoshima Airport. There is convenient access by taxi or rent-a-car. Those arriving by Kyushu Shinkansen are advised to change to a JR local train at Kagoshima-Chuo Station, from which it takes about 50 minutes to get to Kirishimajingu Station. From there, you can get a bus (around 25 minutes; get off at “Maruo Onsen” bus stop and then walk for 5 minutes) or taxi (around 20 minutes).
Located nearby the hotel is the Kirishima Onsen Market, which is the center of the Kirishima hot spring district. Here, you can find an integrated commercial facility with souvenir shops, restaurants, foot baths, and a tourist information center. Within Kirishima Kinkowan National Park is the Kirishima Mythology Park, which is very popular as a roadside station. The chairlift grants a scenic view of the mountains of Kirishima, Kinko Bay, and Mt. Sakurajima. There are also plenty of fun rides for the whole family to enjoy, from the Super Slider to the Road Train, so it’s great fun for everyone from little kids to the elderly.
Prices might go up, so book now while rooms are still available.
