Mt. Chausu (elevation 1,915 m) is the main peak of the Nasu Mountains, and is located in the extreme north of Tochigi Prefecture. It is the most famous active volcano in Kanto, from which even now white smoke rises. From hiking to hardcore mountain-climbing, it is much beloved among all grades of mountain-lover. We particularly recommend the Nasu Ropeway for those who want to enjoy a simple mountain stroll without worrying about all that serious mountaineering gear. From the foot of Mt. Chausu to the 9th station near the top of the mountain, it takes just 4 minutes by the ropeway. The natural scenery can be appreciated year-round, with lingering snow and new shoots of alpine plants in spring, a carpet of fresh greenery in summer, and an array of beautifully colored leaves in autumn. You can enjoy a journey through the clouds as you look down on the rich nature of Nasu from up in the sky.

The Ropeway Summit Station includes a viewing deck, from which you can enjoy the magnificent natural scenery and fresh highland air. From there to the summit, it takes about 50 minutes on foot. There’s a paved walkway, so it can be summitted by inexperienced climbers and families with children. The 360-degree panoramic view from the summit is simply breathtaking. Below your feet is spread out the vastness of the Kanto Plain, and in the distance you can see Mt. Bandai, the Nikko Mountains, and Mt. Tsukuba. Weather permitting, you can even experience the otherworldly feeling of having thin clouds beneath you. In winter (roughly December to March) the ropeway is closed, so please check whether it is running before you head out.
