Taking the Venus Line, a driving route that allows you to soak in all the beautiful mountain scenery, you’ll quickly come across a small lake of just 1 kilometer circumference. Lake Tateshina is surrounded by woodlands of larch and white birch. It is an artificial lake that was originally constructed as an agricultural reservoir, but has since become one of the most famous tourist spots in the Tateshina Highlands area.
The shape of Mt. Tateshina’s majestic peak is beautifully reflected on the lake’s surface, showing its shifting magnificence in each of the four seasons. On clear days you can even look out upon Mt. Yatsugatake, with the view in autumn being particularly spectacular. Enjoy a ride on a boat, or a pleasant stroll by the lakeside. At the sculpture garden you can also encounter artwork that will grant you a pleasant sensation.
The lake is located close to the entrance to the Tateshina Highlands, and can be a base for your Tateshina sightseeing adventure. The nearby Tateshina Tourist Information Center will tell you everything you need to know about traveling in Tateshina. There is a wharf on Lake Tateshina, allowing you to fish for white crucian carp in the summer and wakasagi smelt in the winter.
