A beautiful lake surrounded by mountains located right next to Nikko Yumoto Hot Springs

There is also a popular hiking course that offers the chance to fully enjoy the nature of Okunikko

Along with Lake Chuzenji, Yunoko Lake is one of the most famous in Okunikko. This beautiful mountain lake was formed when lava flowing from the erupting Mt. Mitsudake dammed the Yukawa River. Around the nearly three-kilometer circumference, visitors will find a primeval forest of luxuriant conifers such as northern Japanese hemlock and Nikko fir, and broad-leaf trees such as panicled hydrangea, scarlet leaved viburnum, and Erman’s birch, making for gorgeous scenery with beautiful colors in autumn. A walking path surrounds the entire shore of the lake and takes about one hour to complete. This lake is also known as a famous spot for trout fishing, and many people gather here during the fishing season (May to September). On the north side you’ll find Yumoto Onsen hot springs, known as the “inner room” of Nikko. A trip to enjoy the milky white hot spring water while basking in the relaxing atmosphere of Yunoko Lake is not to be missed.

On the southern edge of Yunoko Lake, visitors will find the famous Okunikko Yudaki Falls, where lake water tumbles over the rocks. The observation platform in the basin is a great spot from which you can view the splendid 70 meter high and 110 meter long falls up close. If you head just a bit further south, you’ll find Senjogahara, a high moor stretching across 400 hectares. At this natural treasure trove, you can observe 350 varieties of wild plants and birds and look out across the vast moor against Mt. Nantai in the background from the observation points found across the area. The hiking course that runs from Yunoko Lake to Yudaki Falls and Senjogahara is easy enough even for elderly visitors and novice hikers. Enjoy a leisurely stroll as you take in the scenery of the great outdoors.
