Shiraito Waterfall

On the border with Nagano Prefecture, straddling the Shiraito Highland Way, is the famous Shiraito Waterfall, a popular tourist destination in Nagano’s Karuizawa Town. About an hour from Kusatsu Onsen by bus, why not stop by here on a short trip out from Kusatsu? The curved shape of this waterfall is said to be unique, making it a must-see. 3 meters high and 70 meters wide, it is formed by subterranean water that spurts forth and runs over the rock face. The interlocking, overflowing appearance of the water is like white silk (shira-ito), from which the waterfall gets its name.
A promenade has been laid down connecting the parking lot to the waterfall, making the journey there all the more pleasant. As you enjoy the rushing of the river and chirping of the birds, before long you’ll hear the falling water. Elegant as silk, its scenery is stunning.
In summer, for one month, there is a projection mapping illusion display, and every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from early February to early March you can enjoy the Icicle Shiraito Illumination in the parking lot. Artificial icicles made of natural water from Shiraito Waterfall are lit up with LED lights to create a truly magical experience. Come and enjoy the fresh air as you are showered with negative ions.
