Aquarium with 500-ton tank and a 22 m tunnel

Although Tokyo has many aquariums, few are located in central Tokyo and few are as impressive as the Shinagawa Aquarium. An aquarium with the aim of educating as well as entertaining visitors, the focus of Shinagawa Aquarium is to immerse its visitors in local and exotic marine life. The facility aims to provide an experience of ‘encountering oceans and rivers’. A fantastic Tokyo attraction for both children and adults alike, the aquarium is one of the best things to do in Tokyo for families enjoying a city break.

Shinagawa Aquarium was opened in 1991 and currently houses over 10,000 animals from almost 500 different species. Beginning at the initial exhibits, visitors get to see and learn about the surprisingly varied local marine life in Tokyo Bay. The 22-meter water tunnel, where visitors can be surrounded on all sides by marine life, is the highlight of any visit.

The route then moves into the newer sections of the facility, where the Undersea Tunnel and the Shark Tank can be found. It’s worth checking the schedule to catch the seal shows and the popular Shinagawa Aquarium Dolphin Show.
While the aquarium has a serious focus on sustainability and ecological protection, any visitor to the facility is sure to be entertained.

Opening Times
The aquarium is open between 10:00 and 17:00 (admission until 16:30). It closes every Tuesday and January 1st.
