Observation deck over farmland
Hilltop observation deck over Sapporo's farmland
More than just a hill with a good view, Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill is both a functional and commemorative reminder of the agricultural heritage of Sapporo, Hokkaido. Situated in the south of the city and overlooking some of its most impressive features, the hill should be the first port of call for any Sapporo sightseeing.
The history of Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill is rooted in the city’s agriculture past. The word ‘Hitsujigaoka’ means ‘hill of sheep’ and this area was originally used for cattle and sheep breeding around the beginning of the 20th century. The Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill was later opened by the Hokkaido National Agricultural Research Center for the purposes of wool research. In later years, a statue of Dr. William Smith Clark was unveiled to pay tribute to the man who influenced the development of the now-thriving Sapporo City. Stunning views of the city, including the Sapporo Dome, can be enjoyed from the hill on a clear day.
The Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill has several other features of interest including the Australian House Souvenir Shop, the Rest House Restaurant, the Clark Chapel and the Hitsujigaoka Wedding Palace. A key tourist location in Sapporo, Observation Hill is also used for private events and weddings.
