The symbol of Otaru city
The canal was a central part of the city's busy port in the first half of the 20th century.
The canal was built offshore to fill in the Taisho era. Approximately 1140m long and has a width of about 40m. Otaru was a vestibule leading to the outside of the Hokkaido exploitation, and many goods collected and distributed it a long tisme ago. Now, on the south of Otaru Canal is a 20m-wide walk way. There are many visitors who visit as sightseeing point most famous for Otaru.
