Beautiful and fascinating to watch
An outstanding exhibit
This is one of the largest aquariums on the Sea of Japan coast with an impressive collection of marine life. One outstanding exhibit is the "Sea of Japan Main Tank" that recreates the nearby aquatic environment. There are thousands of fish of over 40 species swimming in the 800 m3 tank. The scenes of shoals of small fish interacting with the larger species is beautiful as well as fascinating to watch. The underwater tunnel at the bottom of the tank offers a rarely seen view of the fish from below. The nearby Shimano River is also represented in an educational diorama. A walk through the "Niigata Field" outdoor exhibit highlights the inland landscape of Niigata with recreations of rice fields, streams, sand dunes, and lakes. There is also a breeding program for the 70 Humboldt penguins who call the aquarium home. The warm current "Akamutsu Aquarium" is constantly being renewed and has the largest number of exhibits in Japan, numbering over 500. The aquarium also feature the only living hatsume exhibit in Japan and this saltwater fish has become a symbol of Niigata. The range of aquatic experiences on offer should not be missed.
