Known as "north Wall Street" in Otaru

Definitely an interesting visit for all history lovers

The building of the former Bank of Japan Otaru’s branch which was known as "north Wall Street" is definitely an interesting visit for all history lovers. The exhibition (mainly in Japanese) is quite interesting and gives much detail about Japanese economy and history.
The access to the museum is free of charge and it takes about 30 minutes to tour all its alleys. The whole stone building features an exquisite, western inspired architecture and is a pleasure to the eyes especially on snowy days.
Behind the thick doors of an impressive vault, lay 100 million yen of shredded old bills, while not carrying any monetary value, this remains quite a sight and the best part of it is that you are allowed to carry it and feel its weight.
All this makes the museum a great place to visit with kids, there are interactive videos in several languages but with limited details compared to the original Japanese explanations. We do recommend you to pass by the gift shop at the end of the visit and find some interesting souvenirs to bring back with you home.
