Mt. Takao,a spiritual experience

At an altitude of 599 meters, scenic Mount Takao is conveniently close to Tokyo offering hiking in lush nature, about 1 hour by train from the city center The Yakuo-in Buddhist Temple stands on the slopes of Mt. Takao This holy site was founded in 744 on the orders of Emperor Shomu.

There are numerous hiking trails and the main Number 1 Route leading to Yakuo-in is highly recommended for beginners. The pleasant cedar-lined road also passes a tea house, Monkey Park and Wild Plant Garden. A cable car and funicular provide transport halfway up the mountain after which caution is advised as the climb can be arduous. Confident hikers can take the steeper "Otokozaka" path after a flight of 108-steps. It takes about 100 minutes from the base to the summit of the mountain.

Route 6 of the Inari mountain course takes a more leisurely trail following the path of a mountain stream and is known for its natural beauty. Hearing the shell trumpets echo from the temple while hiking through the deep forest make Mt. Takao a spiritual experience for all to enjoy.
The nearest train station, Takao Yamaguchi is directly connected to the hot springs for those wishing to sooth away the tiredness of the day.
