Since 1901 when dairy cows were imported from overseas, the vast Koiwai Farm plantation at the foot of Mt. Iwate has diligently promoted the raising of livestock in Japan. The idyllic landscape of Koiwai Farm has appeared in numerous works of the writer and poet Kenji Miyazawa, as he is known to have frequented both Mt. Iwate and the nearby town of Shizukuishi.
Makiba Park was established as the farm’s sightseeing area. This popular leisure spot includes various activities and food opportunities available only at a farm, all set against the magnificent backdrop of Mt. Iwate. The many unique experiences include a sheep performance and a miniature pony meet-and-greet as well as full-fledged horseback riding and horse-drawn carriage rides. Other activities include archery and playing on a large trampoline. After working up an appetite, choose from a variety of meal options including “Genghis Khan” Mongolian BBQ, charcoal grilled BBQ, a Western restaurant, and various snacks. The farm’s famous soft serve ice cream, gelato, and handmade cheese are sure to please!
Kamimaru Cattle Shed—designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan for its iconic brick silos and other features that bring to life the farm’s 120-year history—and the Koiwai Farm Story guided tour featuring a look at production sites not open to the public and historical insights are also popular.
