Vast Japanese garden

One of the three greatest Japanese gardens in the country

Japan is synonymous with exquisite stroll gardens and Kanazawa is home to its most famous. Kenrokuen Garden, which translates as 'Garden of Six Attributes', offers visitors the perfect example of the unique style of Japanese landscaping.

Designated as one of Japan's three most beautiful landscape gardens, Kenrokuen was once part of the grounds of Kanazawa Castle. For generations, it was maintained by the Maeda family, who ruled the Kaga Clan in feudal times. The gardens are designed to create a different mood as the seasons change, so whatever the weather, Kanazawa’s gardens are always a sight to behold. Once a year, the Kenrokuen Gardens light up for a truly spectacular nighttime display.
Walking around and finding the small tea houses, bridges and pagodas is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the garden, as well as simply soaking up the peaceful atmosphere. A large artificial pond dominates the center of the garden and following its bank, visitors can see the Kotoji Stone Lantern, which is the national symbol of Kenrokuen. Outside the garden is a picturesque pedestrian walkway lined by stores, where you can enjoy a spot of Kanazawa shopping. Here, you are sure to find the perfect souvenir from your journey.
