Kameido Tenjin

A surprising haven in the heart of the city, Kameido Tenjin Shrine, also known as Kameido Tenjin-Sha, is a beautiful Tokyo attraction for those who want to enjoy a moment of reflection. This tranquil sight doesn’t often top the list of things to do in Tokyo, but is worth seeking out, particularly in spring.

Built in 1646, the shrine was expanded in 1662 to include the gardens and bridges that many visitors travel to see. The shrine features a traditional torii gate at its entrance and a series of ponds which are home to fish and tortoises. With the Tokyo Skytree® sharing the skyline, the temple makes for a truly beautiful souvenir photo of Tokyo.

While the temple is beautiful to visit all year round, the Fuji Wisteria Festival, which occurs in late April to early May when the temple’s wisteria flowers are in bloom, provides a surge of interest in the location. With its illuminations from sunset to midnight, the Kameido Tenjin Wisteria Festival is awaited with excitement by many locals. A second festival occurs in February when the plum blossoms bloom. Showering the complex in a constant rain of petals, the shrine is especially beautiful during this period.
