Sculpture forest of the gods

Countless stalagmites stalactites and columns.

Located to the very south of the Japanese archipelago, Ishigaki Island's largest limestone cave is 3.2 km long, with approximately 660 m open to the public. Packed with beautiful stalactites, it also has fantastic shimmering lights, the sounds of dripping water echoing through the caves and even stalagmites that look like the cartoon character, Totoro. The main attraction is the 40 m long, 20 m wide, 6 m high cavern known as the "sculpture forest of the gods" with countless stalagmites stalactites and columns, including some as tall as 10 meters-high.

An underground world of wonder formed from a labyrinth of stalactite filled caverns. Giant clam shell fossils are found in the cave, showing how the ocean floor has been pushed up by plate tectonics through the ages as the stalactites formed over the course of millennia.
Beautiful flowers blossom at the entrance of the caves and no visit is complete without a walk through the subtropical fruit trees and plants. Arts and crafts classes are also conducted on site. The Ishigakijima Cafeteria serves set meals of traditional Okinawan family fare like bitter melon and beef soup. Souvenirs can be purchased at the Ishigaki Island Shop.
