A prayer for the romantics

Hakusan Shrine is a large shrine complex in the center of Niigata City with over 1,000 years of history. Dedicated to the god of marriage, this is the city's main shrine and was recorded in The Chronicles of Japan in the year 720.

People come from all over Niigata to have their c. The temple also draws those praying for family well-being, success in business and passing exams.

There is also a lucky gingko tree, and it's said that those touching it are blessed with children and safe births. The fascinating history, architecture and traditions make this a popular site for both locals and tourists to visit. Approximately 180,000 people visit the shrine for the New Year's celebrations every year. There are lots of carts and stalls selling local delicacies like Niigata's famous poppo-yaki, resembling a pancake on a stick.
