Enjoy Hakone's natural beauty
One of Japan's only mountain railways

The Hakone Tozan Train is a historic mountain railroad that opened in 1919. Take in the seasonal landscape through the windows, from the fresh verdure and autumn foliage to the snowscape of Hakone’s mountains and valleys. When the hydrangeas along the train line bloom around mid-June, the train is known affectionately as the “Hydrangea Train.” The Hakone Tozan Train, which links Hakone-Yumoto and Gora, is also known for its use of the switchback system to climb the steep slope in a zig-zag, where the front and back of the train alternate. The sight of the train vigorously ascending a slope of 80 per mille, the steepest for an adhesion railway, is truly impressive. The Hakone Tozan Cable Car links Gora and Sounzan. At the terminal station, we also recommend transferring to the Hakone Ropeway for a tour of Owakudani and Lake Ashi.
