Colorful market street

Old WW2 black market, now the center for bargain hunting

Modern department stores are an enjoyable way to explore the endless amount of options for Tokyo shopping, but for a more personal experience with a bit of character and charm, Ameyoko Market is a great alternative.
Historically known as Tokyo City’s black market in World War II, Ameyoko shopping street derives its name from the number of American goods that were sold during this time. An alternative interpretation is that the name stands for 'Ameya Yokocho' or 'candy shop alley', as sugar was another high demand black market item. Retaining much of its post-war aesthetic, the street is a walk through history as much as a shopping hotspot. A great place to visit during a day of Tokyo sightseeing, the market is especially bustling around New Years.

Anyone looking for a bargain will find that this market has plenty to offer. Discount clothes, watches, jewelry and, of course, candy are just some of the goods available in this bustling arcade.

With its close proximity to Ueno Main Station and Ueno Park, when you've finished browsing the unique stores, the rest of Tokyo’s key attractions await.
